Reproductive rights are a crucial part of the right to health and, simultaneously, of the right to family life. Some couples have challenges in conceiving a child, yet want to have their own child genetically. In this case, medically assisted (artificial) reproduction may be used.

In Lithuania, medically assisted reproduction is available only for married couples or couples in a partnership

Assisted fertilization is allowed only in cases where infertility cannot be cured by any treatment methods or there is no real chance of success, as well as in cases where the aim is to prevent or treat a severely disabling disease.

In Lithuania, women up to 42 years of age are entitled to State-paid medically assisted reproduction.

The State budget covers:

  • procedures for the determination of infertility
  • specialist consultations
  • treatment of infertility (ovarian stimulation, egg puncture, etc.)
  • required diagnostics (e.g. ultrasound) during treatment
  • compensated medicines
