The Migration Department is an institution that implements migration policy in Lithuania. The department issues visas and other documents related to immigration, citizenship and asylum.

Visas
The department makes decisions on issuing national visas and extending the time of stay in the Republic of Lithuania with a Schengen visa and issues national visas and extends the time of stay with a Schengen visa, as well as cancels national and Schengen visas.
Residence permits in the Republic of Lithuania
The department makes decisions on the issuance or cancellation of temporary residence permits in the Republic of Lithuania, residence permits of long-term residents of the Republic of Lithuania in the European Union (permanent residence permits).
Citizenship
The department examines documents related to the restoration, acquisition, granting, return, establishment and loss of the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania, issues certificates confirming the right to restore the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania and Lithuanian origin, organizes the taking of the oath of persons to the Republic of Lithuania.
Asylum
The department carries out asylum procedures - examines requests for asylum and makes decisions on the granting (non-granting) of asylum (refugee status or additional protection), makes decisions on the cancellation of granted asylum (refugee status or additional protection).
Also, if necessary, the department coordinates the joint actions of state institutions and bodies, non-governmental organizations related to the execution of asylum procedures.
Implementation of entry restrictions
The department ensures the implementation of restrictions on persons entering the Republic of Lithuania or traveling through its territory in transit.
The department also decides on exemptions or permits not to apply restrictions on entering Lithuania or traveling through its territory in transit and the granting of obligations specified in legal acts establishing international sanctions and carries out all necessary procedures for that purpose.
